Paul originally worked as a Secondary English, History, Drama, Indonesian and ESL teacher in Australia as well as overseas in Brunei, Bahrain and Oman.
While teaching, Paul also pursued his passion for plants by studying horticulture at Yallah TAFE.
After arriving home from a teaching contract in Oman, he decided on a major tree change by beginning work as a horticulturist. Over the years, his business, Gardenacious has specialised in the design and maintenance of large acreage gardens on the South Coast of NSW.
In 2006 Estate Gardening (Now Gardenacious) expanded into retail, selling professional-grade garden tools and accessories on-line as well at garden events.
In 2011 Paul was appointed head gardener at a heritage listed, Paul Sorensen designed garden near Wollongong leading to his listing as registered horticulturist number forty-seven in Australia.
Currently Paul also writes for a number of garden and trade magazines.
Over the years he has spoken to over a hundred groups on topics as diverse as French garden design, the flora of Norfolk Island and roses in New Zealand. Highlights have been presentations at the French Embassy in Canberra and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney and Melbourne as well as for the Australian Institute of Horticulture and the Australian Garden History Society.
When not on the road, writing or engrossed in a garden, Paul lives in Jamberoo with his wife, Frances.

Former teacher, Paul Kirkpatrick's diverse career in horticulture began as a large block mowing contractor before his business, Gardenacious, moved into the design and maintenance of large acreage gardens. Currently he is head gardener at a heritage garden in Wollongong, manager of a garden retail business, freelance writer and lecturer on garden history and design.

Paul Kirkpatrick (aka "the extreme gardener") is truly consumed by all things horticultural - he works as a gardener, in his spare time he gardens, reads garden books and watches TV garden shows.
Paul currently works as head gardener of two heritage listed, Paul Sorensen designed gardens near Wollongong as well as freelance writing and managing a retail business, Gardenacious which sells professional-grade garden tools and accessories.
"Many years ago when I was asked to speak at my local garden club, it seemed like a natural progression as prior to my work as a horticulturist I had been a secondary history teacher"
From that first 'gig' Paul and his wife have travelled extensively visiting and photographing gardens within Australia and overseas.
"My artist wife, Frances is a keen photographer, her visuals have helped to bring my words to life."
Over the years Paul has spoken at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney and Melbourne, the French Embassy in Canberra as well as for the Australian Institute of Horticulture and the Australian Garden History Society. He has shared the stage with fellow gardening celebrities including Clive Blazey (Diggers' Club) as well as Stephen Ryan and Costa Georgiades from ABC TV's 'Gardening Australia'.
"I continue to be amazed at how everyone from King Louis XIV at Versailles in France to the English factory worker in his meagre allotment garden gained so much from designing and nurturing their gardens. We can learn so much from what has gone before."
